Coaching Dojo with circle coaching & scaling questions

Scaling in Solution Focus
Scaling in Solution Focus

Today we did a short Coaching Dojo (45 minutes) with 4 people. We explored "scaling questions" from "Solution Focus" and did a "circle coaching" (I will call it so) instead of single or pair coaching. It worked out quite well!

How does circle coaching work?

We had one coachee and all three others were coaches and observers, obviously.

We coached in a round robin system. Every coach had to use one of three types of questions in coching, before the next coach continued:

  • a scaling question or
  • a "one point higher" question
  • an observation (with an open question)

How do scaling questions work?

Scaling questions are AFAIK quite often used in Solution Focused Coaching. You can get a quick overview about scaling questions at wikipedia. According to wikipedia:

"Scaling questions invite clients to employ measuring and tracking of their own experience, in a non-threatening way"

Conclusion & Learning

  • Circle coaching involves everyone, group learning is IMHO higher, I like it a lot.
  • Scaling questions are not that hard to use
  • Mastering good coaching questions requires quite some practice. In a circle you have some more time to think about your next question, but you also have to care for where your predecessor leads the coachee.
  • I heard, that scaling questions are more used in situations with difficult coachees.

Will I use both methods in the future? Absolutely

Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this blog. It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's tough to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and appearance. I must say that you've done a excellent job with this. Additionally, the blog loads very quick for me on Firefox. Superb Blog!
